A standard Tongits game uses a single 52-card deck shared among three players. The dealer gets 13 cards; the other two each receive 12. On your turn, you draw from the stockpile or pick the top discard, then you must throw one card face-up to end the turn. The goal is to reduce your hand to zero dead-weight cards through melds —

sets of three or more matching suits or sequential runs. You can also expose spreads during play to lower your hand count fast. The round ends when a player calls Tongits, calls Fight, or the stockpile runs out. Understanding each of these endings separately is what separates casual Tongits from sharp play.

What is a meld in Tongits?

A meld is a group of three or more cards laid face-up from your hand. It must be either matching ranks across suits or consecutive ranks within the same suit. Melds reduce your total dead-weight card count.

A spread is when you add one or more cards from your hand onto an existing meld already on the table — yours or another player's. Spreading lowers your hand count without needing a full new meld of your own.

A Fight call happens when a player challenges others to compare total hand-card values. The player with the lowest remaining card count at that moment wins the Fight round. Timing the call correctly is a core Tongits skill.

Dead cards are cards in your hand that do not belong to any meld and have not been spread anywhere. Your total dead-card value is what gets compared if a Fight is called during the round.

What does 'burning' mean in Tongits?

Burning refers to the moment the stockpile runs out with no more draws available. At that point, the player who initiated the last legal action triggers an automatic Fight comparison among all remaining players.

Yes. Spreading onto another player's visible meld is allowed on your turn. You play the connecting card or cards face-up, and they count as removed from your hand for the purpose of dead-card scoring.

When two players have identical dead-card totals during a Fight, the player who did not initiate the Fight call wins the tie. If neither player called it, the dealer-seat player takes priority under standard Tongits tie rules.

Theoretically yes — if the dealer's 13-card hand can be fully melded in one turn. In practice this is extremely rare. The dealer draws first and discards normally; a round-one Tongits win is valid if the hand allows it.

There is no direct penalty for calling Fight with a high count — but you lose the round if either opponent holds fewer dead cards. The strategic risk of calling too early is losing when you did not need to.
